Work out the best time of day to visit

Some children feel unhappy if they are tired, have just woken up, hungry or feeling unwell so good timing is key. Getting children to feel happy about having their hair cut is all about them having a couple of great experiences that should hopefully help in the future!

Regular visits (ideally before they turn two)

Visiting as often as possible helps children to get used to coming to the salon and means that it’s not so strange to them. Sometimes the older they get, they become more aware and this can make it harder if they are unsure about what to expect.

Distractions

If your child has a particular DVD that really holds their interest then feel free to bring it along as it may not be in our collection. However, we have lots of firm favourites so we are sure that we will have something that they like. We also find that sometimes watching a phone or playing with a toy is a great distraction.

Spare Clothes

Some children really don’t want to wear the gown which means that hair gets on their clothes and makes them a bit itchy! Even when children do wear the gown, they can often wriggle and some sneaky hairs can find themselves sticking to their tops and trousers. Clean clothes can avoid them feeling itchy for the rest of the day.

Prepare Them

Giving children an idea of what to expect when coming to the hairdressers can help to reassure them and means that it’s not a total shock when they get here. Children get very excited when they realise that they get to sit in a car to play, watch Peppa Pig and get a sticker too!

Snacks, Treats & Drinks

Bribery usually helps and very often we see children sit with some tasty treats to keep them happy and occupied throughout their haircut. Although treats are a great distraction, the hair can often fall on to their little hands and then go into their mouths, so drinks are always a good idea too!

Home Comforts

Bringing their favourite little teddy or toy along to have a ride in the car will keep them company and may comfort them if they are feeling unsure.

Funky little chickens – if getting your feet measured is a milestone, what about haircuts too… are you really a toddler from Cardiff if you haven’t had your hair cut at Funky Little Chickens?! You get to sit in a car and watch cartoons, so don’t even notice the hair cut going on… genius! Plus they have toy box to keep them entertained while they wait.
